Berlin Airport Late Night & Early Morning Flights: BER Transfer Options After Midnight

Apr 18, 2026 9 min read

Your flight lands at 11:45 pm. Or your departure is at 6:15 am, which means you need to be at the airport by 4:15 am. Either way, the question is the same: how do you actually get to or from BER when most of Berlin is asleep?

We do a lot of late-night and early-morning airport pickups. It is a surprisingly large part of our business, because this is exactly when people realize the FEX is not running and start searching for alternatives on their phone at 1 am.

Here is what is actually available, hour by hour.

What runs and what does not: the timeline

This is the part that trips people up. Public transport at BER does not simply “stop at night.” Some things stop, some keep running, and the details depend on the day of the week.

The dead zone on weekdays is roughly 1:00 am to 4:00 am. No trains at all. Only night buses, taxis, ride-hailing apps, and pre-booked transfers.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the S9 fills part of that gap by running every 30 minutes through the night. But 30-minute gaps between trains at 2 am are not the same as reliable transport. Miss one and you are standing on a platform for half an hour.

Night buses: the budget option (with caveats)

Berlin does run night buses to BER. They are cheap (same €5 ABC ticket as daytime transport) but slow, and the routes are not straightforward.

Bus N7 connects BER to U-Bahn station Rudow. On weeknights, it runs the full U7 route from Rathaus Spandau to BER because the U7 itself is not running. On weekends, it only covers the Rudow-to-BER stretch, since the U7 runs all night on Friday and Saturday.

Frequency is twice per hour, so every 30 minutes. If you just missed one, you are waiting.

Bus N7X is an express version that runs on weeknights from Zoologischer Garten via Berliner Straße and Schoneberg directly to BER, skipping most stops. Faster than the N7, but still not quick. Expect 45-60 minutes from Zoo to BER.

Bus N60 runs from Alexanderplatz via Treptower Park and Schonefeld to BER. Useful if you are staying in east Berlin or Treptow. Also runs twice per hour.

The reality of night buses: they work. They are cheap. They are also slow, infrequent, and not particularly comfortable at 2 am with luggage. If you are on a tight budget and your timing lines up, go for it. If you have a 6 am flight and need to be at the airport by 4 am, doing the mental math on night bus connections at 2:30 am is stressful in a way that a pre-booked car is not.

Taxis at night

Berlin taxis run 24/7, and there are no night surcharges. A 2 am taxi from Mitte to BER costs the same per kilometre as a 2 pm taxi: €58-70 to central Berlin, metered.

The question is availability. At 3 am, the taxi rank at BER will probably be empty, or close to it. Coming from the city to the airport, you will need to call a taxi or use the Taxi Berlin app. Response times at night are unpredictable. Sometimes a taxi shows up in 5 minutes. Sometimes it takes 20.

For arrivals at BER after midnight: do not count on a taxi being ready at the rank. On quiet weeknights, the rank can be deserted after 1 am. You may need to call Taxi Berlin at 030 202020 or use the app.

For early-morning departures: book a taxi the night before if you can. Most Berlin taxi companies take advance bookings. It is not guaranteed (the driver might not show up, it has happened), but it is better than hoping for the best at 3:30 am.

Ride-hailing apps at night

Uber, Bolt, and FREENOW all work at night. The apps do not shut off.

The issue is driver availability. At 2 am on a Tuesday, there are fewer drivers on the road. Wait times can stretch to 15-25 minutes, compared to the usual 5-10 during the day.

Surge pricing is actually less of a problem at night than during peak arrivals. Late-night demand is lower, so Uber and Bolt prices tend to stay close to normal rates. A weeknight Uber X from Mitte to BER at 3 am will probably cost €48-58, which is about the same as or slightly cheaper than daytime.

The exception is Friday and Saturday nights, when everyone leaving clubs and bars at 2-4 am is also trying to get a ride. Weekend nights can see surge pricing of 1.3x to 1.8x.

FREENOW connects you with regular taxis through the app. No surge pricing, but the same driver availability issue as regular taxis at night.

Pre-booked private transfers at night

This is where we come in, and we will be honest about why this option exists: it removes uncertainty.

A pre-booked transfer means a driver is confirmed for your exact pickup time, whether that is 1:30 am or 4:00 am. There is no wondering if a taxi will show up, no checking Uber wait times, no standing on a night bus platform.

At Berlin City Transfer, our pricing is the same at night as during the day. No night surcharges, no peak pricing. A transfer from BER to central Berlin starts at €79 whether your flight lands at noon or midnight.

For late-night arrivals, we track your flight. If it lands 40 minutes late at 12:25 am instead of 11:45 pm, the driver adjusts. We include 60 minutes of free waiting time after landing, which matters more at night than during the day because immigration and baggage claim move more slowly with fewer staff on duty.

For early-morning departures, we confirm a pickup time the night before. The driver arrives at your hotel or address 15 minutes early and waits. You walk out, get in, and go.

When a private transfer makes the most sense at night:

  • Your flight lands between 1 am and 4 am on a weekday, and no trains are running
  • You have an early departure and need to leave your hotel by 3:30-4:30 am
  • You are traveling with family or kids, and the idea of a night bus with a stroller at 2 am is a non-starter
  • You have a business flight and need to be rested and on time, not stressed about transport logistics
  • You want the certainty that someone will be there

When it is probably not worth it: you are a solo traveler comfortable with public transport, and your timing lines up with the S9 night service or a night bus. In that case, save your money.

Scenario: your flight lands at 11:30 pm

This is a common one. The flight is not technically “late night,” but it pushes you right to the edge.

You land at 11:30 pm. By the time you deplane, clear passport control (if applicable), and collect bags, it is somewhere between 12:00 am and 12:30 am.

The last FEX trains run until about 1:00 am. So you might catch one. Might. If baggage claim is quick and you do not need passport control, you can probably make it. If your bag is the last one on the carousel (and it is always your bag that comes out last), you are cutting it very close.

Your safest options:

  • Pre-booked transfer: driver is waiting, no time pressure
  • Taxi or Uber: available, but check the taxi rank and app wait times
  • S9 (weekends only): runs every 30 minutes through the night on Friday/Saturday
  • FEX: worth trying if you move fast, but have a backup plan

Scenario: your flight departs at 6:00 am

For a 6:00 am departure, most airlines recommend arriving 2 hours early for international flights, 90 minutes for domestic/Schengen. That means being at BER by 4:00-4:30 am.

BER check-in counters open at 3:45 am. The terminal is open, security is staffed, and things move reasonably fast at that hour because there are fewer people.

Getting there:

  • The first FEX departs Berlin Hauptbahnhof at approximately 4:00am, arriving at BER around 4:23 am. This works if you are near Hauptbahnhof and your flight is international (2-hour buffer). It is tight for Schengen flights.
  • Night bus N7X from the Zoo runs through the night. Check the schedule for your specific departure time, but plan on 45-60 minutes travel time.
  • A taxi or Uber from central Berlin takes 30-40 minutes at night with empty roads. No traffic at 3:30 am.
  • A pre-booked transfer at 3:30 am gets you there by 4:00-4:15 am with no guesswork.

Our recommendation for early departures: if your flight is before 7 am, do not rely on the FEX. The margin for error is too thin. Book a car, whether it is a taxi, an Uber, or a transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Do trains run to BER airport at night?

On weekdays, no. The FEX stops around 1 am and restarts at 4 am. On Friday and Saturday nights, the S9 runs every 30 minutes through the night.

How do I get from BER to Berlin at 2 am?

On weekdays: taxi, ride-hailing app (Uber/Bolt), night bus (N7, N60), or a pre-booked private transfer. On weekends, the S9 also runs.

Is there a night surcharge for taxis from BER?

No. Berlin taxis charge the same per-kilometre rate at night as during the day.

What time does the first train leave for BER?

The first FEX from Hauptbahnhof departs at approximately 4:00 am. The S9 starts running from about 3:50 am.

How early does BER airport open?

Check-in counters open at 3:45 am. Security is staffed from that time. The terminal building itself does not close.

Can I sleep at BER airport overnight?

Technically, yes, the terminal is open 24 hours. Practically, there are no dedicated sleeping areas, and the seating in the terminal is not designed for sleeping. If you have a very early flight, an airport hotel or a late-night transfer is more comfortable.
